Rhodiola is commonly known as Gold root or Arctic root due to its economic importance and geographical location. It has a rich history of traditional use in Russia, Europe and Asia. Earliest use in Europe dates back to Pedanius Dioscorides a 70 AD Greek physician and a botanist who recorded its medicinal uses in his De materia medica.
Rhodiola is one of the most popular plant adaptogens, historically used to improve physical endurance, work productivity, longevity and to treat fatigue. Throughout the years, it has appeared in medicinal books of different countries such as Sweden, France, Norway, Germany, Iceland, Estonia, and Russia.
During 1960’s researchers in the Soviet Union and Scandinavia started exploring the chemistry of Rhodiola rosea. Since than hundreds of studies have been published around the world that show a wide range of activities supporting its traditional use. Scientists have discovered that Rhodiola possesses adaptogenic, stress-protective and antioxidant effects, stimulating cognitive functions such as attention, memory and learning.
Some of the main chemical compounds responsible for its biological activity are rosavin, rosarin, rosin, salidroside and tyrosol.
